About the CRES (Cognitive Research for Exploratory Search) project †
The CRES project's goal is to investigate user's behavior and cognitive
processes during various information seeking tasks on the web. Various users' activities were collected for analysis by using eye-trackers, think-aloud, etc.,
for the purpose of designing better interactive IR systems for
exploratory searches.
This project is supported by a National Institute of Informatics joint research grant.

Outcomes and Activities †
- CRES Leaflet: 20100816-cres-leaflet-en.pdf (661KB) - Introduction and overview of CRES project
- Web action categories: We defined 10 Web action categories for analyzing of user's behavior on the web.
- Lookzones: We defined “Lookzones”, a set of categories indicating which part of the results page that the participants looked.
- Scanpath2SVG: Visualization service for eye movement data.
- VizCMap: Visualization and analysis tool for pre- and post-search concept maps.
- QT-Honey: a Firefox add-on toolbar for collecting web user behaviors, along with Web action categories.
- Lemur Query Log Toolbar (Lemur project): We contributed to the toolbar by reporting bugs and sending patches.
- EyeTrackingSystem: We used a non-contact type eye-tracking system.
