Lookzones

We defined “Lookzones”, labels indicating which part of the results page that the participants looked.

We used these meaningful labels to quantitatively analyze the participants' eye movements.

The Lookzones comprised the following 22 categories on the search result pages:

  1. Title bar,
  2. Menu,
  3. Bookmark,
  4. Toolbar,
  5. URL bar,
  6. Search bar,
  7. Search bar button,
  8. Tab,
  9. Link for services,
  10. Query box,
  11. Search button,
  12. Scroll bar,
  13. Number of hits,
  14. Link for ads,
  15. Spell check,
  16. Title,
  17. Snippet,
  18. URL,
  19. Related search,
  20. Link for next page,
  21. Find in a page,
  22. Status bar.

Results

The following is a result using lookzones. For more information, please see Saito et al.[Wi22008]

This table shows the average number of eye points to each lookzone.

There were significant differences between the two groups. Graduate students looked at the search bar more often than undergraduate students did. Undergraduate students looked at the toolbar, query box, and search button more often than graduate students did.

There were significant differences between the two tasks in scroll bar, snippet, and link for ads lookzones.
